Haddock catches are up in southwestern Nova Scotia as the North Atlantic fish returns to its glory days.
After a near-collapse of haddock stocks in the mid-1990s, the protection of the Georges Bank, less intensive fishing efforts and favorable environmental conditions have led to a rebound.
“Haddock is becoming the poster child of that management success,” Dalhousie University marine biology professor Boris Worm said in an interview Wednesday.
