China doubles shrimp exports in April

China’s shrimp exports through the first four months of the year are more than double what they were last year as the country reported 7,031 metric tons worth of shrimp exported in April, valued at USD 40.5 million (EUR 28.7 million), according to China's General Administration of Customs.

Shrimp exports, along with global demand, have been especially strong this year, putting Chinese exports for the January to April period at 20,786 metric tons valued at USD 118.8 million (EUR 84.3 million), up 67 percent and 116.5 percent, respectively, from last year.

China also exported 100,000 tons of frozen fish valued at USD 314.8 million (EUR 223.3 million) in April. Exports through 30 April were 350,000 metric tons valued at just over USD 1 billion (EUR 709.3 million), year-on-year gains of 5.6 percent and 11.3 percent, respectively.

In total, China has taken shrimp farming to a major high amid the global financial crisis, working deals with developing nations such as Venezuela and exporting USD 2 billion (EUR 1.4 billion) worth of seafood to the U.S. last year, representing more than half of total U.S. food imports from China.
