China Fishery nets Peruvian fishing operation

China Fishery Group Ltd. on Tuesday announced that it acquired Peruvian fishing company Pesquera Alejandria S.A.C. for USD 95 million (EUR 76.5 million), making it the sixth largest fishmeal producer in Peru.

Pesquera Alejandria operates a steam-dried fishmeal processing plant with a capacity of 40 metric tons of raw fish per hour. It also holds approximately 0.97 percent of the anchovy quota in northern Peru and 3.04 percent in southern Peru. With the acquisition, China Fishery’s share of the annual anchovy catch now totals 6.05 percent in northern Peru and 10.91 percent in southern Peru.

The purchase of Pesquera Alejandria comes less than two weeks after China Fishery landed another Peruvian fishing company, Deep Sea Fishing, and its 0.23 percent share of the anchovy quota in northern Peru and 0.76 percent share quota in southern Peru. The acquisition also included a fishing vessel.

Ng Joo Siang, managing director of China Fishery, said the Singapore-based company will be able to increase its production of fishmeal and achieve higher operating efficiencies with its Peruvian operations as a result of the acquisitions.

The Pesquera Alejandria acquisition “is in line with the group’s strategy of seizing opportunities worldwide that will enable China Fishery to gain access to underutilized yet abundant fish species and to achieve our dual aim of being a significant supplier of fish products to the fast-growing China market and a leading consolidator in the global fishing industry,” said Ng.
