A fire on 19 August, 2022, destroyed part of a fisherman’s co-op located in Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

The fire started in the afternoon, and destroyed the freezer, garage, and ice house at the Machon Point Fisherman’s Co-op, CBC reported. Officials with the region’s Fire Marshals Office told media that an investigation into the cause of the fire will take more time.

According to the CBC, the destroyed buildings were mainly used for the co-op’s trucks, which buy lobster from fishermen in the region in the spring. Co-op officials said the freezers, garage, and ice house will need to be rebuilt, but supply chain issues may make it difficult to source new equipment.

Company officials said the buildings were currently only being used for routine maintenance at this time of the year, and that at this time of year no catch was being processed on the premises. However, the building housed a significant quantity of bait for the 2023 season.

The company said the co-op’s six paid employees work in an office across the street at this time of year, and that work will be unaffected.

Officials with the fire department reported that no one was injured in the fire.
