Lobster Council of Canada established

Fisheries ministers from Canada's eastern provinces and the federal government on Thursday applauded the formation of the Lobster Council of Canada, a marketing and promotional body for Atlantic Canada's lobster industry.

The organization will play a key role in maintaining and developing market access, supporting product innovation and creating a long-term sustainability strategy for the lobster industry.

The provincial and federal governments will help fund the organization, providing about CAD 370,000 (USD 354,882, EUR 238,871) over the next two years.

"Canada's lobster industry produces some of the world's finest and most sustainable seafood. The Lobster Council of Canada will play a crucial role in ensuring that this message is heard loud and clear," said Canadian Fisheries Minister Gail Shea. "Developing a strong and recognizable brand for our lobster is a key component for the economic prosperity of this important Canadian fishery."

The council's steering committee includes harvesters, processors and union representatives.

Atlantic Canada's lobster industry employs about 30,000 people, and lobster exports generate more than CAD 1 billion (USD 959 million, EUR 646 million) in revenue annually.
