New Seafood Scotland head aims to grow seafood sales

Patrick Hughes has been chosen to lead Seafood Scotland, that country’s seafood promotional board.

Formerly senior food and drink consultant for SAC Consulting, Hughes will start as head of Seafood Scotland this month. In a statement, Huges said he aims to grow the value of Scottish seafood both domestically and internationally.

“I am particularly looking forward to tackling some of the significant challenges facing the seafood sector over the next couple of years,” Hughes said. In addition, he wants to transform Seafood Scotland into a “sustainable organization that will continue to support and grow the sector while working closely with the wider food and drink industry.”

Seafood Scotland focuses on restaurant and catering trade deals in the United States, Europe (including the rest of the United Kingdom), the Middle East and Asia.

“The Seafood Scotland board looks forward to working with Patrick not only to develop further international opportunities for Scotland’s seafood industry, but also to grow the home market – encouraging chefs and trade suppliers in the U.K. to source top quality seafood from domestic shores,” Iain Macsween, chairman of Seafood Scotland, said in a statement. “Patrick’s knowledge of the seafood sector, alongside his experience of helping businesses develop and grow, made him the natural choice for the role.”

After graduating from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Hughes spent more than 20 years working in the seafood sector. At SAC Consulting, Hughes worked closely with emerging and established food and drink businesses across Scotland to grow their profitability. He also led the Scottish Government-funded Think Local program and Connect Local, a food and drink marketing advisory service made up of SAC Consulting, Scotland Food & Drink, SAOS (the Scottish Agricultural Organization Society) and Seafood Scotland.

“It is this combination – of food and drink experience, first-hand seafood knowledge and direct experience as a seafood producer and supplier – that he will bring to the role as head of Seafood Scotland,” the organization said in its release.
