Ocean Beauty shifts work from Petersburg plant

Ocean Beauty’s Petersburg fish plant typically hires 160 to 180 workers for the season, but company managers say it is difficult to determine the impact of the plant’s closure for repairs following collision by the ferry Matanuska with its dock.

Some of the fish that would have been processed in Petersburg will instead be tendered to the company’s plant at Excursion Inlet, 25 miles west of Juneau, off Icy Strait.

“Some of the work will be done in Excursion Inlet, probably most of it, and some ...by other custom processors elsewhere in Southeast,” said Tom Sunderland, marketing manager for Ocean Beauty in Seattle.
