Seafood festival to feature regional fisheries experts

A large number of fisheries management experts for the Northeastern United States will be on hand for a series of discussions Sunday at the 2015 Boston Seafood Festival.

The event, held 2 August at the Fish Pier in Boston, will feature a number of speakers and presentations discussing timely issues for fisheries in the region. Among them, Linda Cornish, executive director of the nonprofit Seafood Nutrition Partnership, will discuss a recent project geared toward educating women on the dietary benefits of seafood.

Other notable speakers and panelists will include Tom Nies, executive director of the New England Fishery Management Council, Paul Rago, branch chief, supervisory research fish biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and David Pierce, acting director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

The discussions will cover recent stock assessments, new methods of collecting data, how fishing and discards are managed at sea and the role of climate change in the industry, both now and in the future.
