Smuggling crackdown drives Chinese import traffic inland

The opening up of regional Chinese airports is lifting demand for frozen seafood, according to customs data from the capital of China’s most populous province, Henan.

Zhengzhou airport, which in recent years was approved to handle imports of food, claims to have handled 476.2 tons in the first six months of 2018 – an increase of 61 percent. The airport has promised faster customs handling and streamlined warehousing to draw in more seafood freight.

Shipments included salmon from the Faroes, Norway, and Chile, according to customs, which saw a 4,703 percent year-on-year surge in imports in June, totalling 105.7 tons. This appears to be evidence that China’s crackdown on smuggling of salmon from Vietnam has increased the quantity heading into regional centers like Zhengzhou.
