#4: Trump administration proposes cutting off funding for Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund
The fourth most read story of 2025 was related to a Trump administration proposal to eliminate funding for the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund.
The administration proposed the cuts in June, as part of its planned cuts to NOAA. The administration wanted to remove all investment from the fund, which was established in 2000 to help restore Pacific salmon populations in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska.
The program has provided USD 1.9 billion (EUR 1.6 billion) in funding since it was created in 2000, aiding in 16,000 different projects.
Trump’s proposal was absent from both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House’s budget bills, which are both still in limbo due to the longest government shutdown in history, which was only ended by a continuing resolution that largely kept funding at 2025 levels until 30 January 2026.
