The past year was marked by a shift in global trade as the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump in January brought with it a new administration and a new philosophy on trade.

#5: Florida representatives want to ban shark feeding to stop red snapper depredation

The fifth most read story on SeafoodSource in 2025 focused on two lawmakers from the U.S. state of Florida who wanted to ban shark feeding off of the state’s coast.

The lawmakers proposed the Florida Safe Seas Act of 2025 would have expanded existing legislation banning shark feeding in the EEZs of Hawaii and American territories in the Pacific Ocean by adding Florida to the list. Backers of the bill said shark feeding encouraged depredation – the partial or complete removal of a hooked fish from an angler’s line by a shark.

Currently, the bill has been introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives and heard by the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries, but no further action has been taken by Congress.
