3. Russia maps out seafood independence. Russia’s plan to seek independence from seafood imports was the topic of Jason Holland’s September commentary. Holland writes that exporters shouldn’t expect to see business go back to usual once the country’s ban ends in August 2015. Instead, Russia is planning to up its aquaculture efforts, said Alexey Pchelintsev at the Humber Seafood Summit, held in Grimsby, U.K. Since the oceans are limited, Russia plans to focus on fish farming while implementing a State Aquaculture Plan. The strategy forecasts that production will increase to 200,000 MT by 2017 and 410,000 MT by 2020. Ultimately, the country is aiming for an 80:20 split between domestic and imported products.
