VASEP: Vietnam shrimp exporters should concentrate on the UK market

Vietnamese shrimp exporters should concentrate on the United Kingdom, as exports to other markets are flat-lining, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Vietnamese shrimp exports to the U.K. have enjoyed remarkable growth in recent months, the association said. It predicted that demand would continue to rise in the future, resulting in many opportunities for Vietnamese firms producing value-added shrimp products to expand their market share.

VASEP cited statistics from the General Department of Customs showing that exports of shrimp from Vietnam to the U.K. were worth USD 17.3 million (EUR 15.4 million) in the first two months of this year, up 38 percent year-on-year.

In that period, the UK accounted for 4.6 percent of Vietnam’s total shrimp export turnover, overtaking Germany to become Vietnam’s biggest shrimp importer to the E.U.

The impressive volume of shrimp exports to the U.K. was attributed to that market’s greater demand for warm-water shrimp and the competitive price of exported Vietnamese shrimp.

The news site Baocongthuong.vn quoted statistics from the International Trade Center showing that the price of Vietnamese shrimp to this market was about USD 11.5 (EUR 10.2) per kilo – lower than that of Canada, Thailand and Bangladesh, the U.K.’s other main shrimp suppliers.

Vietnam’s shrimp export turnover was expected to reach USD 3.3 billion (EUR 2.9 billion) this year, a year-on-year increase of 12 percent.
