Australian fisheries get new chief

Wez Norris has been announced as the new CEO of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA).

James Findlay resigned as AFMA CEO in November 2018 to take up the position of Australia's director of national parks. Since then, Anna Willock has temporarily filled the role.

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud and Assistant Minister for Agriculture Senator Richard Colbeck welcomed Norris to the role, recognizing his experience in all aspects of fisheries management, regulation, and development.

“Mr. Norris brings unique expertise to the position, with strong understanding of Australia’s fisheries and the Australian fishing industry,” Littleproud said. “He has significant experience in fisheries management having held executive positions in the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, AFMA, and the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. I am confident Mr. Norris will provide the leadership needed to ensure the ongoing good management and sustainable use of Commonwealth fish resources, a strong compliance culture to deter illegal fishing in the Australian Fishing Zone and prioritizing research funding towards activities that directly benefit the Australian fishery industry.”

Colbeck said the appointment would support AFMA’s ongoing work to ensure Australia continues to be a global leader in fisheries management.

“As a former AFMA employee, Mr. Norris has a working knowledge of the organization and the critical role it plays in helping Australian fisheries improve profitability and returns,” Colbeck said.
