Haier Group splashes into aquaculture sector with heat-pump launch

One of China’s most recognized corporate names has entered the aquaculture business with a flashy launch for its heat pump, which acts as a dual-purpose water cooler and heater.

The new dual-use product launched by the Haier Group promises to assist government air pollution efforts by replacing coal-fired boilers commonly used by China’s aquaculture sector to regulate temperatures in the farming of marine species including sea cucumber, grouper, and shrimp.

Seeing an opportunity in the increased offshore aquaculture production – and encouraged by the government – Haier consulted researchers from the national Academy of Fisheries, the Marine Life Research Institute in Shandong, and local aquaculture firms to design the cooler-heater as “low-maintenance and corrosion-resistant,” according to a company statement.

Headquartered in the key seafood production and processing hub of Qingdao, state-controlled Haier has become the world’s leading white goods maker, buying General Electric’s appliances division in the process.
