Polish processor Paula Fish finds Asian buyers to replace Russian market

Polish processor Paula Fish is seeking new markets in Asia to mitigate the impact of Russia’s ban on European seafood imports.

The firm is seeking buyers in China for pelagic fish such as flounder and sprat, as well as Norwegian salmon, which it’s processing at its Polish plant.

“We want new markets because Europe is too saturated for products,” Paula Fish Commercial Director Dariusz Dzikowski told SeafoodSource at Seafood Expo Asia in Hong Kong on 6 September.

The closure of Russia means the company's key markets like the Balkans and Romania have been overrun with product from Estonia and Latvia that traditionally went to Russia, Dzikowski explained.

“This means prices have dropped,” he said. “It doesn’t make sense to fight on price so we are seeking new buyers in Asia.”

The firm is already supplying salmon byproducts to buyers in Vietnam for re-export to Japan. In addition, Paula Fish has  been expanding sales of its pelagic fish in Africa.
