Norwegian salmon exports up 20 percent in July, prices fall

Norway exported 88,000 metric tons (MT) of farmed salmon worth NOK 5.3 billion (USD 642 million, EUR 556.2 million) last month, with the volume 20 percent higher than in July 2017 and the value up seven percent, or NOK 344 million (USD 41.7 million, EUR 36.1 million).

According to the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), the average price for whole fresh salmon last month was NOK 56.45 (USD 6.84, EUR 5.92) per kilogram, down from NOK 64.11 (USD 7.76, EUR 6.73) a year previously. Poland and France provided Norway’s largest salmon markets in July.

For the first seven months of this year, the country exported 572,000 MT of salmon worth NOK 37.8 billion (USD 4.6 billion, EUR 4 billion), representing year-on-year increases of nine percent in volume and four percent in value.

The Scandinavian country also exported 3,350 MT of trout worth NOK 213 million (USD 25.8 million, EUR 22.4 million) last month, up 65 percent and 28 percent, respectively, compared with July 2017. Belarus and the United States were the main markets for this product.

So far this year, 24,000 MT of trout with a value of NOK 1.6 billion (USD 193.8 million, EUR 167.9 million) has been shipped overseas by Norwegian exporters, up 30 percent and eight percent year-on-year, respectively.
