US imports more shrimp for less money

The United States imported 94,623 metric tons (MT) of shrimp in the first two months of this year, an increase of 5.5 percent year-on-year, according to the latest statistics from NOAA Fisheries.

India was the U.S. market’s No. 1 supplier during this period with 18,472 MT, followed closely by Indonesia with 18,447 MT and Ecuador with 12,958 MT.

In value terms, U.S. shrimp imports during the two-month period totaled USD 839.8 million (EUR 746.1 million), down 9.8 percent from USD 931.4 million (EUR 827.4 million) a year previously.

Last year, the United States imported more than 586,000 MT of shrimp with a total value of around USD 5.5 billion (EUR 4.9 billion).
