Peru authorizes higher anchovy quota for second season

The second fishing season for anchoveta (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) in north-central Peru will get underway on 15 November with a significant year-on-year increase in quota.

Peru’s Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has authorized the season and assigned a catch quota of 2 million metric tons (MT), based on the recommendation from the Institute of the Sea (IMARPE).

IMARPE determined the existence of an anchovy biomass of approximately 6.9 million MT.

With the first season set at 1.8 million MT, the total quota for 2016 is 3.8 million MT.

Last year’s second season was set at 1.1 million MT, while the first season was set at 2.8 million MT.

In 2014, just 2.2 million MT of anchovies were harvested by Peru after climatic conditions shut down the second season. This was the lowest harvest since 1998, which was the year of the last very strong El Niño.
