Vietnamese seafood exports rise, double-digit growth of US trade

The total value of seafood products exported by Vietnam grew by 7.2 percent in the first two months of this year, achieving revenues of USD 915.6 million (EUR 796.3 million), according to new figures released by Vietnam Customs.

Vietnam’s No. 1 market during this period was the United States, which imported USD 194.7 million (EUR 169.3 million) worth of seafood, an increase of 21.9 percent. The U.S. market was followed by its trade with the EU and Japan, with imports valued at USD 151.3 million (EUR 131.6 million) and USD 120.6 million (EUR 104.9 million) respectively, both down by 0.1 percent year-on-year.

The highest rate of growth was in Vietnam’s exports to Brazil, which increased by 583 percent to USD 14.6 million (EUR 12.7 million).

Shrimp was the Southeast Asian country’s biggest seafood export in the first two months of this year, with sales totaling USD 378.4 million (EUR 329 million), up 8.5 percent year-on-year. This included USD 212.3 million (EUR 184.6 million) worth of whiteleg shrimp and USD 135.4 million (EUR 117.7 million) worth of black tiger shrimp.

In value terms, these exports were followed by Vietnam’s pangasius and tuna exports, valued at USD 237.4 million (EUR 206.4 million) and USD 60.7 million (EUR 52.8 million), respectively.
