Leading Chinese aquafeed player hedges its bets

Leading Chinese aquafeed firm Guangdong Haid seems to be shifting emphasis in its core business strategy.

The firm has signed cooperation deals worth nearly CNY 4 billion (USD 636 million, EUR 514 million) with local governments across southern and central China that will see the firm join the consolidation push in pig production.

Haid, which in January opened an aquafeed and pig feed plant in Vietnam with a total annual capacity of 50,000 tons, scored stronger growth in pig feed last year compared to its aquafeed sales.

Haid’s aquafeed saw strong growth last year with 2.5 million tons, up 20 percent year-on-year and worth CNY 850 million (USD 135 million, EUR 109 million). In a note on the company, Dong Xing Securities is projecting 20 percent growth in Haid’s aquafeed sales in 2018. However, China’s aquafeed sector remains crowded with much price-based competition, and Haid may see more opportunity for market share in pig farming and pig feed production.
