Norway exported 97,300 metric tons (MT) of farmed Atlantic salmon worth NOK 5.8 billion (USD 733.5 million, EUR 622 million) last month, representing a 2 percent decrease in volume but a similar value to September 2016.

Overall, the Scandinavian country exported 711,400 MT of salmon products with a total value of NOK 48 billion (USD 6.1 billion, EUR 5.1 billion) in the first nine months of 2017, with the volume on par with the corresponding period of 2016 and the value up 10 percent year-on-year.

Norway’s traditional salmon markets of Poland and France have continued to buy the most fish this year.

The average export price for fresh whole salmon last month was NOK 55.47 (USD 7.02, EUR 5.95) per kg, which was NOK 2.12 (USD 0.27, EUR 0.23) less than the average for August but NOK 1.12 (USD 0.14, EUR 0.12) per kg more than in September 2016.

Prices of 3 to 6 kg Norwegian salmon will nevertheless continue to be high over the coming months, with analysts expecting them to be at levels of around NOK 56.30 (USD 7.12, EUR 6.04) per kg this month, NOK 61.25 (USD 7.75, EUR 6.57) in November and NOK 63.90 (USD 8.08, EUR 6.85) in December.

According to Ragnar Tveteras, business economist at the University of Stavanger, Norway will harvest 1.2 million MT of salmon this year and 1.3 million MT in 2018.
