US, China and Brazil buying more Vietnamese pangasius

Vietnam’s pangasius exports totaled USD 790.2 million (EUR 706.5 million) in the first-half of this year, up 5.4 percent year-on-year, with strong growth in the Southeast Asian country’s sales to the United States, China-Hong Kong and Brazil. However, there were trade declines with the EU and ASEAN countries, confirmed the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

In the second-quarter of 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the United States reached USD 106.5 million (EUR 95.2 million), up 31.4 percent from the previous quarter. For the first six months of this year, sales to the market totaled USD 187.1 million (EUR 167.3 million), up 17.7 percent year-on-year. And yet the high antidumping duty imposed by the United States reduced the number of Vietnamese pangasius suppliers supplying the market, said VASEP.

Vietnam’s pangasius exports to China in Q2 2016 totaled USD 72.5 million (EUR 64.8 million), up 80.6 percent from the previous quarter. For the first six months, this trade reached USD 117 million (EUR 104.6 million), up 66.7 percent year-on-year. While sales to Brazil declined almost 30 percent between the first and second quarters of this year reaching USD 16.1 million (EUR 14.4 million) in Q2, for the year through June, exports to this market totaled USD 36.9 million (EUR 33 million), up 41.1 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU in the first-half of the year fell 6.7 percent year-on-year to USD 133 million (EUR 118.8 million), and exports to ASEAN markets dropped 1.9 percent to USD 67.9 million (EUR 60.7 million).
