Q3 2024 trading updates: Grieg, Bakkafrost harvest larger volumes; Lerøy turns in smaller harvest

Salmon firms Grieg, Bakkafrost, and Lerøy have released trading updates for the third quarter of 2024, a month before they all release full results for the period.

According to Bergen, Norway-headquartered Grieg Seafood’s latest trading update, the firm harvested approximately 17,700 gutted weight tonnage (GWT) of Atlantic salmon in the third quarter of this year, representing an increase of 5,500 GWT on the corresponding quarter of 2023 and exceeding its previous guidance for the three-month period by 1,000 GWT.

Its Rogaland and Finnmark production regions in Norway harvested 8,500 GWT and 6,000 GWT of salmon, respectively, in Q3 2024, compared to 4,800 GWT and 1,300 GWT a year previously.

At the same time, the group’s operations in British Columbia (BC) produced 3,200 GWT, down from 6,100 GWT in Q3 2023. No fish were harvested on its Newfoundland (NL) farms.

For the full-year 2024, Grieg previously predicted a harvest volume of 78,500 GWT. Of this, Rogaland is projected to supply 28,000 GWT, Finnmark 27,000 GWT, BC 12,500 GWT, and NL 11,000 GWT. In the longer term, its business strategy includes ambitions to increase its salmon harvest volume to somewhere between 120,000 GWT and 135,000 GWT annually.

Glyvrar, Faroe Islands-based Bakkafrost Group also turned in an increased year-over-year harvest in Q3 2024, totaling 21,600 metric tons (MT) head-on gutted (HOG) fish in the quarter – up 4,900 MT from Q3 2023.

Its Scottish operations harvested 5,400 MT of fish, up from 4,100 MT in Q3 2023.

The firm’s feed sales for Q3 2024 totaled 41,500 MT, up from 35,900 MT a year previously.

The group harvested 73,006 MT of salmon last year and has forecast a 2024 harvest of 88,500 MT, with 63,500 MT coming from the Faroe Islands and 25,000 MT from Scotland.

Lerøy Seafood Group (LSG), based in Bergen, harvested 51,400 GWT of salmon and trout in the third quarter, excluding volumes harvested from Scottish Seafarms, of which Lerøy owns 50 percent. This volume was about 2,500 GWT less than in the corresponding period of last year.

Its trading statement notes its Lerøy Aurora operations harvested 17,600 GWT; Lerøy Midt produced 16,900 GWT; and Lerøy Sjøtroll harvested 16,800 GWT, of which 6,800 GWT was trout). In the corresponding period of 2023, these volumes were 16,500 GWT, 22,400 GWT, and 14,900 GWT – of which 7,100 GWT was trout – respectively.

LSG’s total wild catch volume in Q3 2024 was 13,300 MT, representing a decrease of more than 1,100 MT year over year. The Q3 2024 catch included 1,500 MT of cod.

In 2023, the firm harvested 160,000 GWT of salmon and trout and caught 75,900 GWT of wild fish and shrimp.
