SFP appoints first aquaculture director

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership announced today the appointment of its first aquaculture director, Anton Immink, as part of the American nonprofit’s expanding aquaculture work in Asia.

"I’m excited by the potential to help shape the future of sustainable seafood production, but recognize that scaling up solutions from the farm level to a wider aquaculture zonal management approach will require commitment from a range of partners,” Immink said. “I look forward to input from across the sector.”

Prior to his appointment, Immink was senior consultant at Stirling Aquaculture at the University of Stirling. He has also worked in Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as for the U.K. Department for International Development and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

In a release, the nonprofit partnership, which has aquaculture projects in Hainan, Vietnam and Indonesia, indicated an interest in engaging companies in the fishing industry to help improve food safety and environmental quality.

“It is an interesting time to take up this post, with the expansion of farm-level certifications that generally overlook the interactions that farms have with each other and the wider environment,” Immink said. ”Our roundtable approach aims to bring all stakeholders together with the shared aim of long-term sustainability.”
