Salmon farmers support stroke prevention

In an effort to highlight the health benefits of eating salmon, the British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA) on Wednesday made a CAD 5,000 donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

The donation is particularly timely, as the foundation is preparing for its educational stroke month in June.

The advancement of research and public education by the foundation has helped people better understand heart health issues and stroke prevention, said the BCSFA.

"We are providing a healthy food source in a way that's sustainable for the future. This is key to the long term health of our communities, as is education and continued research like that supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation," said Mary Ellen Walling, the BCSFA's executive director. "It's a message that is very important to me. It's key that people know how to best manage heart and stroke risks. Eating salmon, with its high omega-3 fatty acid content, can protect our health."
