Retail giant Wegmans has issued a recall for certain oysters coming from Connecticut out of concerns they may be contaminated with the bacteria Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
The company issued the recall on 5 August. The recalled oysters are sold as Cape Neddick/Blue Point oysters with the UPC codes 2-06146-00000, 2-06152-00000 and 2-06153-00000. The company said the oysters were sold in the seafood departments of stores in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Massachusetts between 13 July and 5 August. They may also have been sold in Wegmans restaurants, food bards and pubs at those stores in the same timeframe.
The naturally-occurring bacteria can cause serious illness in uncooked oysters, particularly affecting the very young, the elderly, and people with weak or compromised immune systems. The company said customers may return products for a full refund.
