Australians prefer canned seafood over fresh, survey finds

Australian consumers purchase more canned seafood products than fresh alternatives, according to new research from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

A survey carried out by MSC found that more than half of Australian participants said they consumed more canned seafood goods overall, with 75 percent listing sustainability as a top priority in their decision-making and over 50 percent signaling they’d be willing to pay more for sustainable-certified products.

"This research shows Australians are voting with their wallets ... by opting for sustainably certified seafood," said Anne Gabriel, the MSC's Oceania program director, to the Sydney Morning Herald. "This is not just a passing trend, it's an evolution strongly driven by consumer demand that demonstrates greater engagement on traceability and consideration towards our food sources."

The survey conducted by MSC included 16,000 shoppers across 21 global markets.
