Sodexo to require BAP certification

Sodexo on Tuesday announced it will require Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification by 2015 for all of its contracted purchases of farmed seafood sold in North America.

“Sodexo is committed to providing the 10 million people we serve each day in North America with healthy and nutritious meals,” said Arlin Wasserman, Sodexo’s VP of corporate citizenship in Gaithersburg, Md. “Seafood plays a key role in healthy eating and also is central to the cultural and culinary traditions of our diverse customer base. Well-managed aquaculture is an increasingly important part of how we serve our customers today and meet the world’s food needs in coming years.”

Sodexo is a worldwide integrated food and facilities management service provider, serving more than 10 million customers daily in corporations, health care, retirement centers, schools, colleges and government.

The BAP is a set of aquaculture certification standards developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance and implemented through site inspections by the Aquaculture Certification Council.
