Young's responds to mislabeling claims

Young's Seafood on Monday responded to weekend newspaper allegations that it incorrectly labeled frozen seafood products, intentionally misleading consumers.

On its Web site, the UK frozen food firm stated, "We treat this attack on the integrity of our business extremely seriously and categorically refute the allegations in the article."

The Sunday Telegraph article, published on 22 November, details London-based supermarket Sainsbury's investigation into a range of products after leaked documents suggest frozen battered cod and haddock and breaded cod and haddock were mislabeled as having a fish content of 53 percent, when it was in fact only 51.5 percent.

Youngs' also said it completed a detailed assessment of all production records dating back to June 2008 and is confident that the products comply with the required specification, are consistent with legal labeling guidelines and represent good value to the consumer.
