A boost for one country's fisheries, aquaculture output

Fishermen in Vietnam landed 258,000 metric tons (MT) of seafood last month, taking the total volume from capture fisheries for the first eight months of this year to more than 1.9 million MT, an increase of 4.2 percent year-on-year, according to estimates published by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Provinces in the Southeast Asian country’s central area, such as Binh Thuan and Phu Yen, experienced high anchovy catches. Tuna catches have also grown this year, with fishermen in the benefiting from fine weather and reduced fuel prices.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s aquaculture production from January through August reached 2.2 million MT, an increase of 1.9 percent year-on-year. 

Its pangasius farming area is estimated at 6,315 hectares, up 2 percent, with production totaling 740,000 MT, an increase of 5 percent.

The farming area for black tiger shrimp grew 2.9 percent to 577,000 hectares, but production fell 4 percent to 160,000 MT.
