Austevoll profits succumb to low prices

Income for Austevoll fell to NOK 2.9 billion (USD 496 million, EUR 395 million) in the second quarter of 2012, compared to NOK 3.6 billion (615.8 million, EUR 490.5 million) during the same time period last year.

EBITDA in the quarter was NOK 299 million (USD 51.1 million, EUR 40.7 million), down from NOK 795 million (USD 135.9 million, 108.3 EUR million) from the same quarter in 2011.

Income and EBITDA for the company’s fishmeal and fish oil segment were down to NOK 454 million (USD 77.5 million, EUR 61.8 million) compared to NOK 747 million (USD 127.6 million, EUR 101.7 million) in 2011 and NOK 82 million (USD 14 million, EUR 11.1 million) compared to NOK 252 million (USD 43 million, EUR 34.3 million) in 2011, respectively.

The Norwegian company attributes the declines to significantly lower prices achieved for salmon and trout. The spot price for Atlantic salmon fell by 24 percent in the second quarter of 2012 when compared with the same period in 2011. For the pelagic business segment, the sales volume was lower than that in the second quarter of 2011. The lower sales volume is attributed to the month’s delay in the start-up of the first fishing season in Peru, when compared with the same period last year. This has resulted in a lower production volume and a displacement of sales volume to the third quarter 2012.
