The European Union and Guinea Bissau have revived their fisheries partnership agreement.
An agreement in 2012 was put on hold due to political destabilization in the country at the time. This week, Maria Damanaki, European commissioner for maritime affairs and fisheries, announced the renewed partnership together with Guinea Bissau’s newly-elected prime minister, Domingos Simões Pereira (pictured, with Damanaki).
Pereira took office on 4 July following elections in April and May, which the commission called “a major step” toward stabilizing the country.
Along with the new partnership and cooperation between Guinea Bissau and the EU on fisheries matters, Damanaki and Pereira discussed the need to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and the EU’s overall support as a result of the new agreement.
