Icelandic fishing strike ends

The Icelandic fishing fleet has ended its strike action after an agreement was reached between the Icelandic Seamen’s Union (SSI) and the owners’ federation SFS (Iceland Fisheries) late on Sunday 13 November.

According to SSI, the terms of the new agreement were acceptable with the decision taken to examine crew conditions on pelagic and fresher whitefish vessels. In the meantime, pelagic vessels can sail with a crew of eight.

The strike, which began at 2300 on 10 November and extended to around 3,500 crewmen, followed SSI’s concerns about further cuts to crew numbers onboard vessels, which it believed would compromise safety levels.
