‘Paying the rent’ at Billingsgate

Lord Mayor of London Michael Bear (far right) visited Billingsgate Fish Market on Thursday morning to take part in an annual ceremony known as “paying the rent.”

As part of the quirky tradition, the yearly rent paid by the city is “the gift of one fish,” and this year’s payment came in the form of one salmon.

Billingsgate Fish Market has been run by the City of London Corp. for more than 600 years, moving from the City to Docklands in 1982. It’s now situated in a 53,000-square-meter complex near Canary Wharf in Docklands. In its original location in the 19th century, Billingsgate was the world’s largest fish market.
