Preferred opens facility in Chicago

Newark, N.J.-based Preferred Freezer Services on Thursday announced it opened a new state-of-the-art warehouse facility in Chicago. The new location, Preferred Freezer Services of Chicago, is the first fully automated refrigerated warehouse in the country.

Approximately half of the new facility will be devoted to seafood storage. The total amount of seafood stored company-wide is approximately 450 million pounds.

The new warehouse features a freezer capacity of 8 million cubic feet, a cooler capacity of 2.3 million cubic feet, a blast freezer capacity of 1,200 positions at minus-40 degrees F and a 25,200-square-foot loading/unloading dock. In addition, the warehouse’s rail service can be used to load and unload both ship and rail containers.

The opening of the second Chicago facility marks the 24th location for the company, which was founded in 1989. Preferred Freezer Services’ other facilities are located in New York/New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Texas, Georgia and will soon be located internationally in China and Vietnam.
