Slade Gorton initiates sustainability program

Slade Gorton & Co. on Wednesday introduced a sustainable seafood programs that it’s calling “one of the broadest and most comprehensive” in the industry.

The Boston-based company, one of the United States’ largest seafood importers and distributors, sources more than 80 seafood species from nearly 50 countries worldwide.

Among the program’s key elements are working with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) and other organizations like the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) to sponsor fishery improvement projects; sourcing only from suppliers that share the company’s commitment to sustainability and traceability; and maintaining a protocol to ensure that illegally caught seafood does not enter the company’s supply chain.

Slade Gorton’s sustainable seafood program “will have a positive and far-reaching impact on the long-term sustainability of our oceans’ resources,” said Kim Gorton, the company’s CEO. “We believe that sustainability is as much about feeding a growing global population as it is about conservation of resources.”

In addition to its Boston headquarters, the company has offices in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Chicago, Los Angeles and Sparks, Nev.
