Mexico and the Ivory Coast are emerging as high-growth markets for tilapia for Chinese producers.
One of the traditional aquaculture production regions of southern China, Maoming has pushed shipments of tilapia by 52 percent to 3,720 tons in the first half of the year. Shipments to the Ivory Coast were up 450 percent to 2,263 tons.
However Mexican purchases account for 12.7 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively, of Maoming’s total exports. The U.S., which bought 12,000 tons of tilapia in the first six months (up 4.6 percent year on year), accounts for 39.4 percent of the region’s tilapia exports.
Australia is another growth market, increasing its purchases by 75.6 percent to 1,411 tons or a 4.8 percent stake of overall exports.
