Baltimore-based crab supplier and restaurant operator Phillips Foods on Wednesday announced the launch of a sustainability blog dedicated to sharing various global seafood initiatives. Ed Rhodes, the company’s VP of sustainability and aquaculture, will host the blog and post updates.
Caroline Tippett, Phillips’ VP-marketing and strategic development, views the blog as a real-time opportunity to meet the high demand for current sustainability information.
“We are glad to bring Phillips’ passionate sustainability commitment to growing on-line audiences of environmentally focused industry leaders, operator customers, consumers and various nonprofit organizations,” she said. ??
Phillips partners with the Sustainability Fisheries Partnership, the National Fisheries Institute Crab Council, NOAA Fisheries, Common Vision, U.S. AID and others. These organizations believe that the industry should play a key role in improving the fisheries on which they depend with a strong and tangible commitment to sustainable fisheries.
Rhodes has worked in aquaculture and fisheries, both on the research side and in commercial production, for more than 40 years. Rhodes was NOAA Fisheries’ aquaculture coordinator from 1997 to 2001. Prior to joining Phillips in 2007, he was the executive director of the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association. Rhodes chairs the NFI Crab Council, a cooperative effort among leading crab importers that funds fisheries improvement projects in source countries.
“Our vision, coupled with our partners, is one of healthy marine ecosystems, sustainable seafood supplies and a thriving, responsible seafood economy,” he said.
