Quin-Sea Fisheries of Newfoundland, Canada, has dismissed its lawsuit against Mar-Lees Seafood of New Bedford, Mass., USA, regarding payment for scallop shipments. Terms of a “mutually agreeable” settlement were not disclosed.
“Mar-Lees and Quin-Sea have done business together for many years, and we are pleased that we were able to settle this dispute amicably. Mar-Lees look forward to continuing to do business with Quin-Sea in the future," said Gregg Perry, a spokesman for Mar-Lees.
Mar-Lees, which packs value-added seafood under the Nantucket Supreme brand, still has outstanding legal issues stemming from its 2012 sale from former owner John Lees. Mar-Lees is alleging that Lees and others committed 23 violations including fraud, racketeering, unfair and deceptive acts and disclosure of trade secrets.
Mar-Lees contends that Lees, with Sweeney’s knowledge, managed to “fraudulently inflate the value of the company during negotiations for its sale to new investors.” It further claims Lees, et al, failed to disclose to the new investors they had competing interests while negotiating employment and consulting agreements after the sale.
