The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced another company is recalling shrimp from Indonesia that could be contaminated with radioactive material, adding to a suite of recalls that started in August 2025.
Bellevue, Washington, U.S.A.-based Direct Source Seafood is recalling roughly 83,800 bags of frozen raw shrimp imported from Indonesia because they may have been prepared, packed, or held under conditions where they were exposed to Cesium-137 (Cs-137).
The recalled packs of shrimp were sold in 1-pound bags at Price Chopper under the Market 32 brand in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont with a sales date on or after 11 July 2025. They were also sold in 2-pound bags under the Waterfront Bistro brand in Jewel-Osco, Albertsons, Safeway, and Lucky Supermarket stores in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming on or after 30 June 2025.
“Consumers who have purchased affected shrimp should not consume the product and should dispose of or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the FDA said.
The announcement from Direct Source Seafood adds to multiple recalls of shrimp from major retailers like Walmart and Kroger that were all linked to PT Bahari Makmur Sejati in Indonesia. Indonesian authorities confirmed the source of Cs-137 contamination was PT Peter Metal Technology, a steelmaker that imports scrap metal and is located less than 2 kilometers from PT Bahari Makmur Sejati.
The incident rapidly impacted the Indonesian shrimp industry as a sweeping import alert on shrimp disrupted trade and consumer concerns over radioactivity. High-profile officials in the U.S., including U.S. Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. publicly called for more scrutiny of shrimp imports following the incident.
Indonesia Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said during a press conference on 30 September 2025 that the area the shrimp plant is located in was designated a serious incident zone, and in late October, the Indonesian government said it reached a deal with the FDA to allow containers of shrimp from the country to begin entering the U.S. following the recalls.
Despite those efforts, statistics for U.S shrimp imports in October show that the recalls had a widespread impact on Indonesia’s shrimp exports, with a sharp 59 percent drop in export volume to the U.S. year over year due to the recall and publicity of the event.
